About Us
Welcome to the Pretoria Marathon Club (PMC), a cornerstone of the running community in Pretoria since its inception. As the city’s oldest running club, we’ve been at the forefront of fostering a culture of excellence, camaraderie, and enduring passion for running. Celebrating over 50 years of rich history, PMC has evolved from a modest gathering of running enthusiasts to a thriving community that spans generations of athletes.
Founded on the principles of dedication, community, and personal achievement, PMC was established by a group of visionary runners, including the esteemed George Claassen senior. A revered figure in South African sports and the father of Springbok captain Wynand Claassen, George’s legacy lives on through our annual flagship event, the George Claassen Memorial Race, which honors his contribution and commitment to the sport and our club.
Over the decades, PMC has been a nurturing ground for runners of all abilities. From those taking their first steps into running to elite athletes aiming for the pinnacle of their career.
Our club has been a beacon of support, training, and inspiration. Our members have consistently shone on both the national and international stages, bringing home silver and gold medals from the prestigious Comrades Marathon among other accolades, and contributing to the rich tapestry of our club’s history.
Since our inception, PMC has been more than just a club; it’s a journey through running history. Our members, ranging from enthusiastic beginners to elite athletes, have consistently brought home silver and gold medals from prestigious events like the Comrades Marathon, embodying the spirit of excellence and determination.
As we step into the next fifty years, we invite you to join the PMC legacy. Be a part of a community where every stride celebrates our past and paves the way for future triumphs. Whether you’re chasing personal bests or lifelong friendships, PMC is your starting line for extraordinary running adventures.

Club Captain
I love the friendship and camaraderie that running brings. Running tests your physical and mental capabilities and takes you to places – literally and figuratively – where you would never have gone before. When I make plans, they usually start with a run or race somewhere.

I discover long-distance running late in my life – but better late than never! Through running, I have met great people I would never have met otherwise.

Alan Brett
Vice-Chairman
Running has been my passion for more than eight years. I’ve completed 11 marathons and many half-marathons, sharing countless kms with the local community. I enjoy being part of a group that motivates one another, both on and off the road – and I’m proud to serve as Vice-chairperson of Pretoria Marathon Club, helping to build and support our running legacy.

I am passionate about running and people. Running has shaped my personal legacy and continues to inspire me. It takes both body and spirit to places never experienced before. #PMCforever

I don’t remember exactly when I joined the club, but I think I’ve been a member for about 36 years now. I’ve done a lot of road running during this time, though I prefer trail running. I don’t run much anymore, but I like to stay connected to the club in a small way.

Otto Ueckermann
Co-Opted Member (Chill Zones))
I was introduced to marathon running in 1973 by Rodney Augustine, and it quickly became my lifelong passion. Over the years, I completed 26 Comrades Marathons – earning 17 silver medals – along with many memorable races across South Africa. Although my competitive days are behind me, running and being part of Pretoria Marathon Club remain some of my greatest joys.

Magda Postma
Club Manager
Running has meant so much more to me than just exercise. It’s been my space to clear my head, find balance, and push past limits. Running is challenging, rewarding, and always worth the effort.

Running for me is more than just a physical activity – it is life changing. Every run is an investment in a stronger body, a clearer mind, and a more resilient spirit. It’s like giving yourself a little gift each day. The hardest step is the first one out the door – after that, your body and mind will thank you.

In my opinion, running strengthens some of the most essential aspects of being human – mental resilience, physical well-being, positivity, and meaningful social interaction. The Pretoria Marathon Club provides an excellent foundation for all of these, and I’m lucky to be involved! It’s a privilege to be part of the club, a privilege to be able to serve in any capacity, and a privilege to be able to run.
